Surgeon at Berghain, Berlin 4th March 2012

“Here is a recording of my DJ set at Berghain recorded between 7am and 10am on Sunday 4th March 2012. Things are getting pretty deep at that time of day, I was enjoying the waves of energy throughout the set. Internal > External and back again.”
Surgeon at sunrise, sounds like a good night out.

Headhunter - Prototype (Modeselektor’s Broken Handbrake Remix) Tempa, 2009
Life is another step closer to completeness having seen Modeselektor kill it at Taste of Sonar here in Cape Town last night. This one was on the wishlist and they delivered in style.

Fhloston Paradigm — Chasing Rainbows, 2012
Forthcoming on Hyperdub, Fhloston Paradigm is a King Britt side project. Spot the sci-fi references everywhere with the bass heavy, John Carpenter soundtrack style, brooding, analogue badness. That’s a lot of adjectives but it really is quite good.

Avrocar - Maiden 39 (Guidance, short.sharp.shock, 2004)
A sort of Pet Shop Boys meets Boards of Canada or Ulrich Schnauss ambience. Available for download from Avrocar’s SoundCloud. Bliss.
-
Pan Sonic - Laptevinmeri (Katodivaihe, Blast First Petite, 2007)
High-voltage deep bleep in a vintage Sähkö style (as Boomkat points out), specifically Mika Vainio’s solo project Ø.
-
Redshape - The Land from Throw In Dirt / The Land [3024], 2012
Brand new Redshape track set to the animated short film Sirene by Raoul Servais from 1968. That’s some affecting video for such a jacking bass line. Excellent.
-
Sigha - Drown (Abstractions I-IV, Hotflush, 2012)
Dwelling in the depths with serious intent. The A-side opens with a blissful, albeit all-too-brief (perhaps deliberate), ambient piece. Great production.
-
Theo Parrish - Electric Alleycat (First Floor, Peacefrog, 1998)
Not that I’m keeping score, and it doesn’t happen often (enough), but I reckon 2 out of 3 tracks* looping in my head after waking up are by Theo Parrish. One could do worse. Afternoon siesta and Mr Parrish win again.
(*not simultaneously, of course)
-
Jamie Principle - Baby Wants To Ride (Leonard Rroy Edit)
According to the uploader on YouTube, “this is the original version, given to various Chicago DJ’s on Cassette Tape in the 80’s.” Real raw ish, hot!
For those interested in the history of house, Gridface has a great interview with Rroy from 2010.

Shifted Phases - Dance Of The Celestial Druids (The Cosmic Memoirs Of The Late Great Rupert J. Rosinthrope, Tresor, 2002)
“…all the records we’ve made give you clues, how to tap into your inner selves. We bring you right to that door and give you the key. We’re doing what we’re able to, dropping messages from day one without getting too deep and scaring people off. We can only hope that people will pick up on what we’re doing.” — James Stinson (Shifted Phases, Drexciya) in an interview with Richard Brophy in 2002
